Thankfully, there is Chablis! Dom. Vocoret & Fils Chablis 1er Cru "Montee de Tonnerre"

November 05, 2010

Found this wine at The Austin Wine Merchant, Domaine Vocoret et Fils, Chablis Premiere Cru "Montee de Tonnerre" 2007, ten bucks off to make room for the 2008. Really bad label design.  My good instinct however, told me to grab two, even though I was not familiar with Domaine Vocoret. BOY am I glad I did, and am kicking myself for not grabbing all four.

A decent size vineyard of about 125 acres, the Vocoret are now in their fourth generation on the property.  They do things the old fashioned way, they say, and their wines are clearly the better for it!

The 07 Montee de Tonnerre was Classic Chablis. Warm, green nose, showing nice crisp tones and complexity.  The palate was gravel, flint and mineral, overlayed with green fruit, fat warmth and nice solid acids. I served it with "Suppa dei Vongole", Manila clams cooked in white wine, garlic and butter broth with parsely and herbs. Yummo-liscous. It was a pleasure to just sit with the wine after the meal, and enjoy it's complexity. Clearly, the second bottle needs to be stored for a couple more years, but it shall be worth the wait!

Cheers,
