Spanish whites are so over looked

February 16, 2010

My bud McGovern at Central Market suggested this one. Portal White ,Cellar Piñol Terra Alta 2008. $14.99, a touch more than I usually like to spend but McGovern really loved it. I can see why. Garnacha Blanca 70%, Sauvignon Blanc 20, Viognier and Macabeo 5% each...cool.

An inviting nose, rich but not heavy. Richly green, slight spice, clean mineral tones. The palate is huge,  but not heavy. Lovely, clean, rich warm leaf tones, minerality, green apple fruits, long finish with a fresh thyme tone.  Perfect with anything you would pair with white. I had it with a genuine Club Sandwich: Buttermilk toast, three slices. Bottom slice mayo, turkey, lettuce, mid slice mayo both sides, top of bacon and tomato, with last slice of toast with mayo.

It would go equally well with shrimp, fish, crab, oysters, light chicken. Well you get the idea.

Drink this Wine!

Cheers,
