Monday night burgers, home made fries and $9 wine that works

February 08, 2010

Busy cold day. Running late so burgers and home made french fries seemed good, especially since I had some oil left over from Fried Chicken last night. Grandma Rose used to cook everything in schmaltz, chicken fat, I guess that's genetic. Not that I made a regular habit of course. Today is my youngest niece's 40th birthday. ugh. That makes me feel ancient. She is a fabulous person and I'm beyond proud of her and love her to death.

Was working with Steve at HEB, saw this on the shelf, figured for $9 what the heck. That's the fun of wine. Give new things a try. So I grabbed  Hoya de Cadenas Reserva Temperanillo 2005.

The nose is tight.Just a whiff of blueberry, red fruit. A tight palate as well, Black fruit in restraint, the palate more dominated by a mineral, tarry earth tone. Good acids cut thru the burgers and fries. Pleasant enough to finish it while watching Antiques Roadshow and heading to bed early. Up at o'dark thirty (aka 6ish am) to help with deliveries tomorrow in the near freezing early morning temperatures. ugh.

 Drink this wine!

Cheers,
