Rob Moshein - The Austin Wine Guy

Another winner from The Wine Merchant...

February 14, 2010

Scoured the shelf at the Merchant, with some help from Darcy. This looked good.

Ch. Coupe Roses, Minervois 2007 La Bastide.

I love Minervois wines. The earthiness, elegant rustic quality. This wine has that in spades, but all so elegant and in balance. Go figure, John doesn't put a wine on the shelf that isn't all in elegant balance.

The nose is light, but black fruits, and clean earth.  The palate shows the distinct typical flavors of this Carignan and Grenache blend.  Dark black fruit, but not at all fruity. Elegant flavors, clean earth under the fruit, with a slight tar tone. Black pepper on the finish, moderate acids give a nice, light backbone. This is not a heavy wine, nor is it lightweight. This is one of those "sweet spot" elegant contradiction wines: complex flavors that are not dense nor heavy on the palate. Easy dinner of salad, Prime Rib Eye (on sale for half price) and more potatoes tossed in goose fat and oven baked with sea salt and pepper. Perfect pairing.

Oh yeah, $12.  Need I say more? nahhhh.

Drink this WIne!!

Cheers,

Rob Moshein, Austin Wine Guy.
